Photograph the Divine

Updated: Dec 28, 2025

"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you:

God is light; in him there is no darkness at all."

~ 1 John 1:5

I love photography. A great photo is all about light: how the light touches the subject, how soft the light is, how much light is in the frame. Is it any wonder that I love this way of showcasing light? God, who is light itself, is present all around us. All photos capture some of God's presence in the way they capture the light.

Black and white photos especially clarify God's fingerprints, as they have no colors to distract from the light itself. During the COVID lockdown in 2020, I decided to take my passion for photography more seriously. I read books and watched a plethora of videos online about aperture, ISO, composition, focal lengths, and everything else related to taking amazing photos. I wanted to give the world a glimpse of when, where, and how I see God.

I won't debate whether a DSLR camera or a phone camera is the ideal way to take photos. Both are valid and both have distinct advantages and disadvantages. I began in 2020 with my phone, then progressed to a DSLR, then came back to my phone. The right editing software will ensure viewers can't tell the difference in what camera I used. The bottom line for me is that I see God everywhere. He's in nature, in people I meet or don't even know, in buildings, in perfectly presented food...literally everywhere. I carry my phone everywhere so never miss a change to photograph the Divine. I truly bought my phone just for the camera.

God, thank you for your presence everywhere.

Please give me eyes to see you, ears to hear you, and a heart that loves you. Amen.
